3 pitas

The humble beginnings of the pita began back in Ancient Greece. A simple bread and meat recipe that is known today as a souvlaki, yiros, gyro or our pita. It’s a tasty combination of charcoal cooked meats, delicious fillings, fresh sauces and of course fluffy pita bread to wrap up the delicious package.

According to archaeologists, this combination of bread and meat has been dated back to the 17th century BC in Santorini, where ancient stone barbecue skewers have been unearthed. Even later during the Byzantine era historical evidence has been found of street vendors selling souvlaki with pita! Fast forward to the 1950s and the first souvlaki shops appeared in Greece selling pita sandwiches filled with meat and fried potatoes or what we know today as a pita.

From humble ancient beginnings, the pita continues to be a flavourful Greek icon.  Today at Zeus we continue these traditions, cooking our meats over the spit the old way, over searing hot charcoal that creates our signature smoky flavour, pairing them with modern fillings.
